What Are the Different Types of CNC Machining?
There are two main categories to understand when it comes to CNC machining types:
By Process
l Milling: This is the most versatile type. The workpiece is stationary, and a multi-axis cutting tool carves away material to create complex shapes with flat or curved surfaces, pockets, slots, and more. There are different variations of milling machines like 3-axis, 4-axis, and 5-axis depending on the complexity of cuts needed.
l Turning: The workpiece rotates on a lathe, and a stationary cutting tool shapes the material. This is ideal for cylindrical or rotationally symmetrical parts like shafts, gears, and bushings.
By Cutting Method
l Drilling & Tapping: This uses specialized CNC machines to create precise holes and threads.
l Laser Cutting: A focused laser beam cuts through the material with high precision, often used for sheet metal or thin plastics.
l Waterjet Cutting: A high-pressure jet of water with or without abrasive particles cuts through various materials.
l Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM): This non-traditional method uses electrical sparks to erode material, allowing for intricate cuts on conductive materials regardless of hardness.
