Operation and Working Principle of Tower Crane Anemometer

Operation of Tower Crane Anemometer

A tower crane anemometer is a device used to measure the wind speed at the location of a tower crane. It typically consists of a control unit, a wind speed sensor, a display, and an output terminal. To use it, the anemometer is installed at a fixed position on the tower crane, and the display is connected to the crane's cab via a cable. By turning on the power, the current wind speed can be measured. When the wind speed reaches a certain level, the anemometer will trigger an alarm, alerting the crane operator to the wind condition and the need to stop hoisting operations.

Working Principle of Tower Crane Anemometer

The wind speed sensor is the core component of a tower crane anemometer. It measures wind speed by detecting the pressure difference generated when air flows past the sensor. Specifically, the sensor has two tiny pressure sensors that detect the pressure difference between the windward and leeward sides. Generally, the greater the pressure difference, the faster the wind speed.

How to Determine Wind Speed Level

1. Weather Forecast: Refer to the weather forecast to get an estimate of the wind speed level, which can help determine which operations need to be suspended.

2. Anemometer Reading: Refer to the numerical reading on the anemometer to determine the current wind speed level. According to the national standard GB/T 15979-2002 "Safety Regulations for Tower Cranes," wind speed levels are classified as follows: Level 1 (≤ 5.4 m/s), Level 2 (5.4-7.9 m/s), Level 3 (7.9-10.7 m/s), and Level 4 (10.7-13.8 m/s). Hoisting operations should be stopped when the wind speed exceeds Level 4.

How to Use the Tower Crane Anemometer Effectively

1. Correct Installation: The anemometer should be installed at the top of the tower crane according to national standards to ensure accurate measurements.

2. Regular Calibration: As a precision instrument, the anemometer should be regularly calibrated by a professional service provider to maintain accuracy.

3. Accurate and Reliable Sensing: Ensure that the anemometer is installed in a suitable location and that the sensor is functioning properly. The system should be able to provide timely and accurate alarms when the wind speed reaches the warning threshold.

In conclusion, understanding the operation and working principle of a tower crane anemometer is crucial for improving safety on construction sites. By following national standards and operating procedures, and ensuring the accurate and reliable operation of the anemometer, we can effectively prevent accidents caused by adverse weather conditions.
