Microsoft's Xbox Series X/S Sales Struggles and the Uncertain Future of Its Next-Gen Console

While Sony's PlayStation 5 has outpaced the Xbox Series X/S in sales, the true extent of Microsoft's console sales remains unclear, as the company stopped publicly reporting figures in 2015. This was around the time Xbox One sales began to lag behind the PlayStation 4. Since then, Microsoft has focused on highlighting Xbox Game Pass subscriber numbers, although this metric has not grown as rapidly as anticipated.
Various reports have hinted at Xbox Series X/S sales being lower than expected, but thanks to Take-Two’s Q3 2025 earnings report, we now have a more precise estimate. According to Take-Two, by November 2024, around 94 million current-generation consoles (excluding the Nintendo Switch) had been sold.
While the report doesn't give an exact breakdown, Sony previously stated it had shipped 65.5 million PlayStation 5 units as of September 30, 2024. This suggests that the Xbox Series X/S has likely sold around 28.5 million units, which aligns with previous estimates.
This figure is expected to have grown since then, but Microsoft acknowledged that Xbox console sales during the Christmas period were disappointing. If we consider the numbers, Sony’s PlayStation 5 commands roughly 70% of the current generation's total sales, with the Xbox Series X/S accounting for around 30%. This ratio marks a decline from the previous generation, where the Xbox One sold 58 million units compared to the PlayStation 4’s 117 million, giving Microsoft around 33% of the total market share (excluding the Nintendo Switch).
The Xbox Series X/S has not been the worst-selling Xbox console, however. The original Xbox only sold 24 million units before it was quickly overshadowed by the early launch of the Xbox 360. There’s speculation that Microsoft might take a similar approach with the Series X/S’s successor, potentially abandoning it for a new console sooner than expected.
Despite the Xbox Series X/S's underperformance, Microsoft is developing a next-generation console and possibly a separate handheld device. However, it remains to be seen whether the company can provide something compelling enough to lure players away from Sony's more established position in the market. Microsoft's shift toward becoming a multiplatform publisher, with Xbox games now also releasing on PlayStation 5 and potentially the Nintendo Switch 2, only adds more uncertainty to the future of its next console.
