PREFAZIONE La pandemia di Covid19 ha segnato un punto di svolta fondamentale della nostra epoca. C’è un prima e un dopo su molte cose e, indubbiamente, uno dei fattori che ha svolto un ruolo particolarmente significativo nel corso dei mesi del lockdown e in quelli successivi è stata la tecnologia digitale. Anche in questo caso, c’è un prima e un dopo, sia nel modo in cui queste tecnologie sono state utilizzate, sia nel modo in cui le abbiamo interpretate e vissute. In quell’ormai lontano 2020, ci sono stati giorni difficili in cui i nostri computer, i tablet e gli smartphone ci hanno tenuti vivi, nel vero senso della parola. Hanno fatto sì che la nostra vita procedesse sebbene fossimo segregati in casa, ci hanno permesso il contatto quotidiano con amici e parenti, sebbene mutuato attraverso lo schermo di un PC o di uno smartphone, mentre tutto il resto fuori era fermo. Abbiamo fatto aperitivi con gli amici collegati al pc, abbiamo ordinato la spesa, letto libri, guardato film, lavorato, studiato. Ma è stato davvero proprio così? O meglio, è stato così per tutti? La tecnologia è stata fondamentale per una parte del mondo e della società che ne aveva ampio accesso, ma per un’altra fetta di popolazione, a tutte le latitudini, questa accelerazione tecnologica ha significato l’emarginazione. Coloro che erano già indietro, che non avevano accesso ai dispositivi digitali, si sono visti tagliati fuori da ogni genere di attività. Hanno dovuto faticare molto di più per poter fruire dei servizi e trovare risposte ai loro bisogni, spesso vitali, in un momento in cui ci dicevamo “nessuno deve rimanere indietro”. Prima del maggio 2020, secondo un rapporto UNESCO, il 60% dei programmi nazionali di apprendimento a distanza si affidava esclusivamente a piattaforme connesse a internet, ma quasi mezzo miliardo di giovani – ovvero circa la metà degli studenti delle scuole primarie e secondarie di tutto il mondo non disponeva di una connessione a casa e veniva così escluso dalla partecipazione. Secondo i dati e le indagini citati nel rapporto, nel 2020 negli Stati Uniti, per esempio, un terzo degli studenti, dalla scuola dell’infanzia al dodicesimo anno di età, è stato escluso dall’istruzione a causa di connessioni a internet o hardware inadeguati. Per quanto riguarda i risultati dell’apprendimento degli studenti, secondo i ricercatori dell’UNESCO, questi si sono bloccati o sono diminuiti drasticamente quando le scuole hanno utilizzato l’edtech (education technology) in sostituzione dell’insegnamento in presenza, anche quando i bambini avevano accesso a dispositivi digitali e connessioni a internet... Neonati allo schermo In un mondo fatto di chiaroscuri, gli effetti del digitale sono in parte positivi, in parte negativi, ma sull’età evolutiva sembrano prevalere questi ultimi. Eppure, nel nostro Paese sono tanti i bambini persino molto piccoli che trascorrono del tempo davanti a uno schermo. I risultati della nuova indagine del Sistema di Sorveglianza Bambini 0­2 anni dell’Istituto Superiore di Sanità (ISS), presentata a marzo 2023 delinea un quadro preoccupante sotto questo profilo 1. L’indagine si è svolta tra giugno e ottobre 2022 con interviste in tutte le regioni italiane ad eccezione del Molise e della Provincia autonoma di Bolzano. Complessivamente hanno risposto ai questionari 35.550 mamme con tassi di partecipazione a livello regionale compresi tra l’89,2% e il 98,6%. Un campione, dunque, molto vasto da cui è emerso che in Italia il 22,1% dei bambini di 2­5 mesi passa del tempo davanti a schermi che possono essere tv, computer, tablet o telefoni cellulari. Esiste una differenza di esposizione legata al territorio: in particolare si va dal 13,6% della Provincia autonoma di Trento al 30,3% riscontrato in Puglia. La maggior parte dei bambini esposti passa meno di un’ora al giorno davanti a uno schermo, ma dall’1,9% (Veneto) al 9,1% (Calabria) vi trascorre almeno 1-­2 ore. I livelli di esposizione crescono all’aumentare dell’età in tutte le regioni e, tra i bambini di 11-­15 mesi, i bambini che passano almeno 1-­2 ore al giorno davanti a uno schermo diventano una percentuale significativa che varia tra il 6,5% di Trento e il 39,3% della Calabria. Se si considera il tempo di fruizione complessivo, che va da meno di un’ora a oltre tre ore, la percentuale di bambine e bambini che ha una esposizione agli schermi tra gli 11 e i 15 mesi d’età in media arriva al 58,1%, vale a dire 1 su 2. In generale, le percentuali sono più alte nelle regioni del Sud. Questi risultati hanno spinto l’ISS a fornire indicazioni, in particolare sulla “necessità di informare i genitori ­ e tutti gli adulti che si occupano del bambino ­ dei rischi legati all’uso delle tecnologie audiovisive e digitali in età precoce. Un ruolo importante in questa azione preventiva può essere svolto dagli operatori socio­sanitari e dagli educatori che hanno frequenti contatti con i genitori”. Anche l’Organizzazione Mondiale della Sanità (OMS) nel 2019 ha stilato nuove linee guida su “attività fisica, comportamento sedentario e sonno” in cui si raccomanda un tempo limite di esposizione agli schermi per i bambini fino a 5 anni. In particolare, fino a 2 anni d’età questo tempo dovrebbe essere pari a zero, mentre da 2 a 5 anni non dovrebbe superare un’ora al giorno, possibilmente meno. Tra i rischi dello stare davanti a uno schermo vi è quello di favorire comportamenti sedentari che compromettono la salute dei bambini. È stato infatti dimostrato un legame tra l’esposizione agli schermi e l’obesità dovuto a diversi fattori: oltre alla mancanza di movimento, un aumento del consumo di cibo mentre si guarda lo schermo, l’esposizione a pubblicità di cibi e bevande non sane che influenzano le preferenze alimentari dei bambini, la riduzione della durata del sonno...
